Once again, here’s a way that you can participate in that CHANGE our new president was yapping about as well as help women and families. Please read and contact your elected officials. I will.
Swiped from Ann over at Feministing:
Both statistically and anecdotally, incidents of violence against women increase as the economy falters. As Obama prepares to release his budget, now’s the time to ask him and Congress not to reduce funding for preventing violence against women and helping survivors. According to Women’s eNews:
Congress is currently authorized to spend up to …

Like the majority of Americans (and world citizens) I had never heard of Sarah Palin until she was announced as John McCain’s running mate. Never. When Barack Obama announced Joe Biden as his choice for VP, I wasn’t scratching my head thinking, “WHO?” I had heard of Joe Biden. A lot.
In my last full time job before law school, I worked at a domestic violence organization. There, I heard Senator Biden’s name many times in association with legislation and activism against domestic violence. People in my agency would talk about …

Americans tend to take their rights pretty seriously. Right to free speech, assembly, bearing arms, voting, privacy, religion, etc; we love that shit. People from all walks of life and every belief on the spectrum clings to one or many of those rights at some point in time. What happens, though, when my right to do something comes up against your right to do something? Who’s holding the big joker?
This may have slipped under your radar, depending on how up on public policy you are, but the US Department of …

Briefly: I really hope that America is not fooled by this Palin for VP mess. I REALLY hope that those sensitive to feminist issues and women’s concerns are not fooled by this. I REALLY REALLY hope that those who were supporters of Hillary Clinton are not fooled by this.
Sarah Palin may be a woman (can we get verification on this?), but she is all Republican. She is not in favor of the policies that women like myself believe are important. She doesn’t even think you should be able to have …

I swear, NYC must have a monopoly on stupid police officers.
Apparently, walking down a street with a long coat on can get you mistaken for a prostitute and arrested!
That’s basically what happened to Monica Gonzalez, a 40-year old grandmother. Gonzalez was arrested for prostitution after police spotted her walking in an area known for prostitution. That area, one block on Third Avenue, was also on the way from Gonzalez’ crib to a local hospital. She was on her way there because of complications with her asthma medicine. Officer Sean Spencer …

Author/Historian Elaine Tyler May is writing a book about the history and impact of the birth control pill. To that end, she is requesting stories from both men and women about their experiences with The Pill. I found the query interesting and figured I’d respond and include an excerpt of my reply here in this space. I encourage you all to submit your own answers to the questions. Hey, if she uses your response, you get a discount when the book comes out!
The Pill is often considered one of the …

That’s the plain and simple of it.
I am freakin’ LIVID about this case. Reposting the article from Feministing, this story looks like a blatant case of judicial overreaching and abuse of power. If the Georgia Supreme Court does not hear this case, a gross miscarriage of justice will have occurred and I am going to freak out.

Well shame on him/her!

We’ve made it past the first vote (if you remember my blog about it last month) and the results weren’t so positive. Now we’re gearing up for round two in the Senate on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would have a major impact on the lives of women who’ve been subject to pay discrimination. Today, women in this country are still paid only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men! WHAT? And we still have to pay the same gas prices?! Nutso!
With 57 Senators voting in our favor, we are now just …

This article from Good Housekeeping has been circulating around the interweb for like, EVER. Still, I can’t help but get a kick out of it. Post it on a messageboard and you’ll see how many people find absolutely nothing wrong with the message put forth in the article/ad. I guess at a certain level, there’s nothing wrong with it if that’s what you’re into. It’s the entitlement of it all that really gets to me.
If anything, I …

Hey readers, today is Blog for Fair Pay Day! Meaning people all over are blogging about this important issue. Some facts, briefly:

Women in the United States are still paid only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men;
African-American women earn only 63 cents; and
Latinas earn only 52 cents for every dollar paid to white men.
Women at law firms are making up to $90,000 LESS than their male counterparts. (While $90,000 is a nice salary, it’s bullshit when an equally qualified man doing the same exact job as you is making $180,000!)

Outraged? …
