Young, fly and feminist

This post is written as part of the “This is What a Young Feminist Looks Like” blog carnival. Check out Fair & Feminist on Friday, August 27th to see which other bloggers are shouting out and being recognized as young, fly and feminist.
Where Have All the Young Feminists Gone?
Did you hear? Young feminists are disappearing at an alarming rate. The only people who care about women and women’s issues are staring menopause in the face. Young people don’t care about anything and we certainly don’t care about reproductive health issues ...

On: new EC and access for all

This post has two parts: (1) an update on ella™ and (2) barriers to access for men.
Last Friday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was approving the sale and use of ulipristal acetate (UPA), a new form of emergency contraception (EC) to be sold under the name ella™. Already available to and used by women in Europe, UPA has been determined to prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse. Emergency contraception has been available in the US, most popularly under the name Plan B. ...

Steve Slater is not a hero

According to the television news media, the internet and your momma, Steven Slater is a hero. You know him, he’s the career flight attendant who, after a confrontation with a passenger, basically gave his employer Jet Blue, the offending passenger and everyone else in the vicinity a fat middle finger when he grabbed two beers, popped the aircraft’s rear door, and evacuated the plane via the inflatable emergency slide. Slater then calmly took the AirTran shuttle home and chilled until the police yoked him up.
I’m rather annoyed at people referring ...

On: Forever 21′s new maternity line

So Forever 21 has a new maternity line, Love 21 Maternity, set to arrive in select stores. Maternity clothes don’t usually generate much buzz beyond the mommy set but since Forever 21’s target demographic is young women and teens, the initial reaction from many is shock and judgment. Not to mention the fact that 3 out of the 5 select locations chosen for Love 21’s debut (Arizona, California, and Texas) happen to overlap with the states with the highest percentages of teen pregnancy according to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen ...

Countdown to the NY Bar IV: See ya in August

Alright yall, there are just 9 days (216 hours) until the New York State Bar Exam. I’m sick inside. I have stuff I want to write here but can’t commit the brain power. So I’ll get back with you after the exam. In the meantime, I want to share this post I read earlier from a fellow bar-taker’s blog, Thanks, But No Thanks, that manages to sum up many of my thoughts right now. An excerpt:
Please Stop Telling Me I’m Going to Pass the Bar: When I say to you, “I ...

A few (legal) things re: Oscar Grant

I’m not going to talk about whether justice was done in the Oscar Grant case or go on about the larger issue of Black men, law enforcement and violence in America. There are plenty of folks online providing that kind of commentary and probably better than I could. Rather, I’m going to quickly touch upon a few points of law without contributing analysis of the case or speculating upon the outcome. I wouldn’t do that without having been in the courtroom or having read the transcripts. No promises, but maybe ...

Dude, where’s my bike?

Every bike I’ve ever had in my life prior to 2009 has been stolen. From my own backyard, time after time, locked or unlocked. People LOVE to steal bikes. Sometimes it’s because they don’t like you but most of the time bike thieves don’t know or care who they’re stealing from. They need parts or a quick way to get downtown for free. If your bike is nearby and relatively easy to steal, it’s getting swiped. That’s why I think the Brits over in Cambridge (borrowing an idea from Canada) ...

Role Reversal: paying mom an allowance

My momma keeps asking me for money and I’m pissed. For the past several months, my mother has called me up and asked me to send her some money for various things ranging from minutes for her pre-paid cell phone to cash for cigarettes. It’s gotten to the point where I see her name pop up on my phone and I sigh loudly, my shoulders slump, and I get upset. “What you want now?” That’s my standard greeting for my mother these days. This is stress that I really don’t ...

not another tribute post

The internet is abuzz on this first anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, much like it was a year ago when he died. We can all recall how the chatter online nearly shut down the internet as people hurried to find out exactly what happened, whether it was true or not, and then came together to comfort one another, remembering their friend.
I say friend but Michael is easily considered like family to many. You would think MJ tucked them in at night, helped them celebrate their highest of highs and was ...

Fire Alarms aka Why I Will Probably Die a Fiery Death

I realized today that people just don’t care about fire alarms anymore. I was at my bar review course just a minute before we were scheduled to start a riveting lecture on Real Property when a strange honking sound and flashing lights went off. It was a fire alarm and not having heard it before in that particular building, everyone kind of stood still with a puzzled look on our faces until it sunk in. OH! FIRE! No wait, it was more like oh… fire? Meh. It was only one ...
