When curvy meets corporate…

It’s an 80+ degree day in New York City. Today I am wearing a dress. The dress is blue and white, reminiscent of that nautical theme that’s been popular lately; it’s got a bubble hem, is sleeveless, and has a cowl-neck. The dress is not tight but not voluminous either and the hem reaches about 3 inches above my knee (I literally just measured it). On most other people in my office, this dress would be simply “cute.” On myself, however, I wonder whether it’s pushing the boundaries of office …

The shaming of Rima Fakih

They almost got me.
The day after Rima Fakih took the Miss USA crown, posts went up and news features condemning Fakih for being a stripper. I must admit, I was upset. Fakih’s win was pretty awesome – a Lebanese, immigrant woman from Michigan who supports insurance coverage of contraception and likes pizza. I didn’t want her to mess it up with some shitty stripper pics. The media got me. With headlines like, “Rima Fakih, Miss USA, Caught In Pole Dancing Scandal,” and “Miss USA’s Pole Dancing Past Revealed,” had me …

Letter to the Times Sq “Person of Interest”

Dear Mystery Man,
This is a really difficult time for you, huh? I bet you’ve called in sick to work and you’re at home drawing the curtains. I’m sure you aren’t answering the phone. You’re probably thinking about whether you’ll ever walk out the door again. I know, it sucks. You were hanging around Times Square (God knows why) in Shubert Alley (who knew it had a name) just minding your business and like most anyone rocking layers in weather upwards of 80 degrees, you started to strip. That one decision …

Everybody Hates Kelis

I had to ask myself today, “why is everyone jumping on Kelis’ back today?” The answer: Yesterday, Nasir Jones was ordered to pay Kelis Rogers back child and spousal support stemming from a 2009 order (TMZ). What I’ve seen on the internet today in response to the judge’s ruling is outrageous and indicative of a deep-seated contempt for women in general and common misconceptions about the legal process involved in a divorce. Think I’m reaching? Stick with me.
Let’s start with a cursory glance at what’s floating around the interwebz:
A trending topic …

Poland gets in on the anti-abortion billboard game

I don’t find myself with many opportunities to draw a parallel between Poland and Georgia unless I’m talking about Georgia the country and not Georgia the U.S. state and that would still be a stretch. The time has finally arrived, however, in the form of anti-choice billboards designed to open decades-old wounds and fuel long-held fears. [Click here to view the billboard. Contains graphic images]
As discussed in a previous post, billboards have gone up in predominately black neighborhoods around Georgia claiming that Black children are an “endangered species” and abortion …

Green is the New Red: You recycling commie bastard!

If you separate your cardboard, glass, and plastic from the rest of your trash, you may be supporting the downfall of America as we know it! You might just be a Communist!
Before I explain why you’re chipping away at capitalism and the American Way with every Coke can that tumbles into a blue bin, let me start with the inspiration for this post. Through my daily work, I came across the Twitter profile of TradConMom. A self-proclaimed “traditional conservative mom of 3; a patriot; a cake decorator, a devout Catholic, …

Newsflash: Black babies are near extinction. Save two for the Ark.

When I first heard about Georgia Right To Life’s(RTL) new campaign I sort of chuckled. The group, through its ally the Radiance Foundation, has placed huge billboards all over the Atlanta metro area proclaiming that Black children are an endangered species and directing viewers to their website. Upon visiting the site, one is bombarded by videos which purport to tell the truth about Planned Parenthood and the health care provider’s true agenda – to eradicate Black people from the earth. Let me be clear on why I found this sort …

My Tiger Woods Post

Do you know how there are some people, no matter what they generally do, you just won’t get upset with them? I feel that way about Sean PDiddy Combs. I feel that way about Beyonce. I feel that way about Tiger Woods. For now. There’s no telling how this story is going to develop, and it seems to be developing every 12 hours, but right now I really don’t see what the big honking deal is about Tiger Friggin Woods.
Yes. That man cheated on his wife. Can’t say that …

health hop music

I believe the children are our future. I believe that it’s important to meet people where they are when trying to reach them. I believe we should educate young people about real topics like sex, economics, politics, race and health. So it follows that I should like Dr. Clarke’s “Health Hop Music.” Uh, no.
Dr. John D. Clarke has a series of albums he’s written, produced and performed focusing on educating young people about their health. Relying on studies with conclusions like “the average teen listens to 40 hours of music …

I’m pretty disgusted right about now. I was asleep, knocked out due to my sickness and woke up at midnight to find that the House had passed a health care reform bill (HR 3962). Sounds good at first, especially since we have been trying to get SOME form of legislation moving through the process. Unfortunately, this is not what I was hoping for. I get the feeling that most people had/have no idea that today, in what felt like a backdoor sneak move, Representative Bart Stupak put forth an amendment …
