Why Susan G. Komen Is Making You Choose Between Breast Cancer And Women’s Health

Sometimes it seems like the forces opposed to Planned Parenthood are really engaged in some super genius reverse psychology aimed at increasing individual donations to the organization. Of course it’s just wishful thinking on my part but that’s exactly what happened when anti-choice lawmakers inCongress tried to de-fund Planned Parenthood in early 2011; the organization received more than $2M in donations. Now, it’s the Susan G. Komen Foundation that is raising goo-gobs of money for Planned Parenthood while taking a hit to their own reputation, to boot.

Susan B. Anthony Liked Abortion? How The PRENDA Bill Targets Black, Asian Women

What if I told you that there was going to be a law that would prevent anyone from aborting a child because of its sex or race? Your gut reaction would probably be favorable – even if you’re prochoice you probably don’t think the Ob-Gyn’s “it’s a girl” proclamation is reason enough to terminate a pregnancy. But what if I told you that the matter wasn’t so simple and that there were some potentially negative and harmful repercussions if this policy were to become the law of the land?

It’s like a racist word search!

I can remember back in the day when homework consisted  of a few pages out of a workbook. I would get so excited when one of those assignments was a word search. How delightfully simple! I could find the words super quickly and be done with plenty of time to run outside and play. Well the feeling came back just a little bit tonight when the interwebz alerted me to a one Jennifer McMillen and her opposition to a hip hop club called Prime6 in her family-oriented Brooklyn neighborhood.
I won’t …

The Great o.b. Drought of 2010: A lesson in social media fail

I wear a lot of hats and one of those fancy toppers is as a social media strategist. Yep, not only do I spend an inordinate amount of my free time online, but I get paid to do so for my nine to five. That’s why I feel like I can speak on this with a slight air of authority – Johnson & Johnson missed out on a prime opportunity to speak to its customers via social media in regards to its O.B. Tampons. Oh yes, this is a post …

The one where I take Christine O’Donnell’s side

Christine O’Donnell opposes comprehensive, evidence-based sex ed. She’s unclear about whether separation of church and state is a cornerstone of the first amendment. She believes in cross-bred mice with human brains. She believes that victims of rape or incest should be forced to carry their attacker’s child to term. She’s also, unfortunately, not a witch. There are SO many reasons to dislike Christine O’Donnell and many more reasons not to vote her into the United States Senate. I find all of Sarah Palin’s “Mama Grizzly” endorsements to be ridiculous but …

Whatever, Anna Chapman

Do you know who Anna Chapman is? If not, Google her. Better yet, don’t. She really doesn’t need any more hype attached to her and I’m doing enough just by writing about her. Anna Chapman one of 10 Russian “sleeper agents” shipped out of the US after their spy ring was discovered in July. The thing about Chapman that grinds my gears the most is how the media talks about her. You won’t hear about any of her spy buddies because news outlets rather focus on 28 year old Chapman …

On: new EC and access for all

This post has two parts: (1) an update on ella™ and (2) barriers to access for men.
Last Friday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was approving the sale and use of ulipristal acetate (UPA), a new form of emergency contraception (EC) to be sold under the name ella™.  Already available to and used by women in Europe, UPA has been determined to prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse. Emergency contraception has been available in the US, most popularly under the name Plan B. …

Steve Slater is not a hero

According to the television news media, the internet and your momma, Steven Slater is a hero. You know him, he’s the career flight attendant who, after a confrontation with a passenger, basically gave his employer Jet Blue, the offending passenger and everyone else in the vicinity a fat middle finger when he grabbed two beers, popped the aircraft’s rear door, and evacuated the plane via the inflatable emergency slide. Slater then calmly took the AirTran shuttle home and chilled until the police yoked him up.
I’m rather annoyed at people referring …

Underwire Under Fire: barrister barred by own brassiere

When you’re a young teenaged girl, you love going to the mall with your friends, buying keychains from Spencer’s Gifts and 2 for $20 Aeropostale t-shirts. When you needed staples like bras and
underwear though, you usually called upon mom or some other family member. For me it was my aunt which was annoying because she’s crazy cheap and she wouldn’t buy me anything that she wouldn’t buy for herself. My aunt has always hated underwire bras so for most of my high school years I was blocked from wearing …

NAACP – literally plays the race card

I’ve always been a supporter of the NAACP, sort of. I’ve never been a paid member of the organization, nor have I ever joined a campus or local chapter. I haven’t participated in NAACP functions or actions. I mean, I’m a pretty functioning Negro doing my part every day to advance colored people so I think I’ve done something. I’m a supporter in theory because I’ve always believed in the mission of the NAACP and I have great respect for the organization’s historical impact. I’ve even come to the defense of …
