About

Who are you? In short, I’m just an above-average young black woman with freckles and LOTS of opinions.

That’s not an answer. We want to know more! Ok. Ok! Let’s see… originally from New York’s Mid Hudson Valley, I bounced out of NY and headed to the Ivy League or something like it. Actually, I moved to NC and had some of the best times at  one of the nation’s “Public Ivies“, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (GO HEELS!). There, I majored in African & African American Studies as well as Philosophy. After graduating from law school in 2009, I am presently working full-time while pursuing a Master in Public Administration because hey, bourgie folk can’t live without degrees!

No, tell us about YOU. I like to laugh, dance, listen to 90s music, daydream, talk shit, cook, make out, swim, row/scull, be right, watch foreign films,  jump double-dutch, debate, watch True Blood, Grey’s Anatomy, Top Chef and random other reality shows or whatever comes on ABC Family, smile, drink, travel, read, color in coloring books, be the life of the party, eat burnt grilled hot dogs, give closing arguments, shop, pretend I’m on ANTM, and flirt. I like my coffee light and sweet, I don’t know what beets taste like and dipping french fries in ice cream seems totally normal to me. I am crazy. I am opinionated. I use bad words. I am snarky. I type really fast. I have had a fish named Terrance :(

What’s this “bourgie” stuff about? You think you’re better than me? Bourgie, Interrupted (aka Bourgie Adventures) emerged after several tongue-in-cheek conversations and inside jokes. Don’t take it too seriously. FYI: when I say “bourgie,” I do not mean anti-workingclass/snob/better than you/over-privileged/bitchy. I only refer to bourgie with the best of intentions. We are fabulously young, educated, beautiful, aware, professional, creative, involved, and worldly. For better or worse, some folks would label us as bourgie (I know my family does). “According to UrbanDictionary.com (a reputable and trusted source, of course),  “Bourgie” is as much an idea, and a state of mind, as it is an attitude towards enjoying good food, good friends, and good conversation, everyday. It evokes a mood of simple elegance, casual yet sophisticated—modern. Sounds good, right? So just read my blog and LOL!

Why should I read what you have to say? This is an outlet for all of the random and crazy thoughts that pop into my head. From pop culture, to the law, and issues I care about, I’m giving you whatever is on my mind. People seem to genuinely enjoy hearing my opinions on various topics and I’m quite flattered. Most of all,  I’m pretty sure I know what I’m talking about. Think of this as a credible source of information with a slight bias towards all things Black, female and cupcake-like. We could be here all day, folks.

Do unicorns exist? My, that’s a silly question. Of course they do.

I’m, like you, 20something, single black female, except I live in Chicago. I work full time at a non-profit organization. I took a semester off, but I still consider myself a college student. After being called “bourgie” for the umpteenth time, I finally embraced it. We have most of the same interests, so I’ll definitely be checking out what you have to say. My blog is basically a collection of my everyday experiences on how I relate to my race, as well as other races, and how my upbringing garnered certain results and reactions. Anyway, as you can tell, my comments are rather long-winded, so expect the same from my posts, if you decide to check them out ; )

I am so glad someone else understands the tongue-in-cheek factor of the term Bougie (or Bourgieness).

Just last week I was obligated to to send a “disclaimer” to respond to an email from a Minister chastising the name of my blog. How dare I use the term “bougie”! lol

Keep up the good work. I’m coming back for sure!

  • thejadedvoice said:
